CANNERO RIVIERA
The Portofino of Lake Maggiore
Blue Flag since 2005 until today, Orange Flag since 2009 and Italian Historic Citrus grove since 2019, Cannero Riviera is all this and much more... Discovering Cannero Riviera means immersing yourself in a Mediterranean atmosphere. The mild climate due to its proximity to the lake and the mountains arranged in a crown behind it protect the village from the north winds, allowing the flora to grow luxuriantly. In the Citrus Fruit Park we will walk among the ‘golden apples’ where biodiversity reigns and here we will find the Canarone, with its lemon flavour and citron peel, an indigenous fruit of the lakeside resort. Cannero lies on the 46th parallel and is the northernmost village in Europe where citrus fruits grow in the soil.
We will also stroll among the splendid camellias that were the protagonists of the first Camellia Exhibition in Italy in 1965. The historical centre and its narrow streets will take us to an enchanted place, to discover the Old Harbour and the wonderful villas, which in the past belonged to ancient noble families and the rich Italian bourgeoisie. In the background, the Castles of Cannero, owned by the Borromeo family, built on the remains of the fortress known as Malpaga, a departure point for merciless pirates. From the lakeside promenade full of magnolias, we then reach the beach, where we can breathe in the scent of the sea. Not only history, but also spirituality with a visit to the Grotto of Lourdes and the parish church of St George. Next to the town hall we will discover the Piazzetta degli Affreschi where, as in an open book, we will see the main historical events of this charming community represented.
What are you waiting for then? Let yourself be overwhelmed by this glimpse of the Mediterranean at the foot of the mountains and let yourself be guided through the colours and scents of Cannero Riviera.
