ORTA
The capital, the pearl, and the poetry
Orta is a small medieval village, a tiny 'pearl' where time flows slowly and unchanging, and every corner vibrates with beauty and poetry. The lively central square, surrounded by typical archways, hosts elegant cafes and old shops. Dominating it all is the 16th-century Palazzo della Comunità, small yet majestic, once the political heart of the 'Riviera di S. Giulio.' Surrounding the square are the passageways of the old town: charming alleys, stairways, narrow, winding streets that weave between noble palaces, frescoed houses, villas with courtyards and gardens.
Boats depart from Orta's dock and after a few minutes of sailing, they reach the Island of San Giulio.

The island of San Giulio
A gateway to heaven
Legend has it that the island was once inhabited by dragons and serpents until Saint Giulio, after crossing the lake's waters on his cloak, landed here and built his 'centenary' church, the eponymous Basilica that houses the memories of saints and precious artistic treasures.

The Sacro Monte
The gateway to paradise
There are places in Piedmont and Lombardy that hold traces of a distant past, made of pilgrimages and prayers. These are places of faith, devotion, and expressions of popular piety and art.
