THE ISLAND OF SAN GIULIO
A gateway to heaven
Legend has it that the island was once inhabited by dragons and serpents until Saint Giulio, after crossing the lake's waters on his cloak, landed here and built his 'centenary' church, the eponymous Basilica that houses the memories of saints and precious artistic treasures. A path circles the island. It is 'the way of silence and meditation.' recalling the presence of a monastic community founded in 1973. In the monastery, where time is regulated by the Benedictine 'Ora et labora,' the nuns pray and work in absolute silence and solitude.
On the island, modernization is distant. The present is absent. There is only history and memory, preserved in the essence of a timeless past.
